One thing we always have on hand is the portable DVD player that has more than three headphone holes, which is good for the caruntil the disagreements on what to watch start! We always pack an activity kit for each child. We let them each pick a few items that they would like to play with and we also pack snacks/drinks and things like magazines, books, activity books, their favorite stuffed animal and each child get their own bag filled with their things. We call them the “traveling totes” and they get to decorate the bags with their name and whatever they want using Crayola fabric markers and different items they like.

The portable DVD players are a godsend. Wish they had them all the years I traveled with my two children (now 24 and 25)!

Having children pack their own carry on backpack with snacks, books, toys, games, coloring, mazes, word searches, crosswords, cards, headphones, small blanket and/or pillow, and extra clothing for comfort, gives them the responsibility for managing their own travel time.

I find that making a list of all that we will need, comes in handy. I check off each item as I pack it, as to avoid the forgetting of something. I usually pack a day or 2 in advance so I feel a sense of accomplishment. I pack toys and books to stay away from boredom. Usually dvds end up becoming my best friend. I try if possible to give my children their space, so they are not tempted to cause commotion. It makes for a peaceful drive. Another key is, if you can, buy your gifts when you get to your location. This alleviates overcrowdedness.
