New Mommy: Robe if You Want To

PDFPrintE-mail

Jack has the most adorable bathrobe. John's sister got it for him and it has trains on it. He wears it after baths (as you do with a robe), since he refuses to stand still and let someone dry him. So now he runs and drips.

Said bathrobe hangs on the same rack as his hoodies. Jack has an extensive hoodie collection, including one KU one, a Texas fleece, two fire truck hoodies, one striped one, and a Batman one that's too big but was too cute and on sale. Since it's warmed up around here (FINALLY), he usually wears a light long-sleeved t-shirt to daycare, topped with a hoodie, and his jacket over that. So this morning he was mostly dressed, except for the hoodie element.

"C'mon, Jack. Go get a hoodie," I said. He comes back with his bathrobe.

"That's not a hoodie," I said as we walked back to his room. "Let's wear the fire truck one."

"NOOOOOOOOOOOO!" he yelled as he ran into the hallway. "CHOO CHOO!"

"You want to wear this one?" I asked. And he nodded.

He NODDED! His head! He understood my question and had a response. C'mon, y'all. That's impressive. And you know? I couldn't see any reason that he SHOULDN'T wear his bathrobe to daycare. So it'll look a little weird--no paparazzi is staking out Shady Side to blare Jack's sartorial choices across the tabloids.

"OK," I said. "Let's put it on."

So we did. Jacket over the robe, so the fleece trains hung below the hem of the jacket by about six inches. And when we arrived at daycare I just said, "Jack wanted to wear his robe today." And our provider didn't blink. I'm sure she's seen weirder.

I spend so much time saying "no" to Jack. "No, don't eat the cat food." "No, don't stand on the chair." "No, don't lick the remote control." Here I got to say "yes" to something that made him happy and didn't hurt anyone. AND it gave me a blog entry. Winners all around!
