October is a great time for oysters, and the fall festival season provides plenty of opportunities for kids to have fun while mom and dad get their slurp on. Here are four oyster festivals going on this month in Maryland that have something for everyone — even if oysters aren't your thing.

Oysters

Captain Avery Museum Oyster Festival, Shady Side October 15

A party that celebrates both the oyster and the fun of a day by the Bay with family and friends, the festival offers food from top local eateries, music from local bands, children’s activities, craft offerings, and Avery’s own “Choose It!,” a way of filling your calendar with fun all year round.

Oyster lovers can get their fill any way they like ‘em: raw; fried in a basket, platter, or roll; in stew; in soup; in sushi; or in shooters. Lots of other fine food will be available, including hot dogs and hamburgers for the kids, if you can get them to stand still long enough.

Kids can choose from a variety of activities provided at no extra cost, such as watching live crab races, getting their faces painted by local artists, making crafts, and playing games.

Cost is $6; $2 for ages 12 and under. Hours are 12:30- 5p.m.

Great Baltimore Oyster Festival, Baltimore October 14

The Great Baltimore Oyster Festival returns to Baltimore’s Inner Harbor on Saturday, October 14, 2017 from 1pm to 5pm at West Shore Park! The festival includes live music, oysters, seafood dishes from local restaurants, beer wine, & specialty cocktails, and family-friendly activities.

NEW this year is the Oyster Shucking Contest, pinning professional Oyster Shuckers against each other and the clock! Learn about oysters, their vital role to keeping our waters clean, how they grow, and where they come from.

The event is FREE to attend but you need to purchase a ticket to eat oysters. Tickets are $10 in advance or $12 at the event and include your choice of 6 Raw Oysters, 6 Fried Oysters, or 4 Grilled Oysters. Sorry, no refunds can be given on any tickets sold.

The festival will benefit the Chesapeake Bay Foundation & Waterfront Partnership’s Healthy Harbor Initiative.
