Family Movie Review: Long Way North (PG)

Kernel Rating (out of 5): whole-popcorn-kernalwhole-popcorn-kernalwhole-popcorn-kernalhalf-popcorn-kernal

MPAA Rating: PG       Length: 81 minutes

Age Appropriate For: 8+. The story is about a teenage girl traveling to the North Pole to find her missing grandfather; there are some emotionally heavy themes, including the grandfather’s absence and the girl’s friction with her parents; some rude jokes, including bathroom humor and some disparaging comments about girls; some flirtation between the teen girl protagonist and a teen boy, and a scene of CPR mouth-to-mouth; and some danger in the form of a hungry polar bear.

The gorgeously animated ‘Long Way North’ tells a simple story of a young woman’s coming of age during her search for her lost grandfather. The film’s attention to detail visually evens out some of its narrative clichés, making this a must-watch for families with imaginative girls.

Family Movie Review: Keeping Up With the Joneses (PG-13)

Kernel Rating (out of 5): whole-popcorn-kernalwhole-popcorn-kernalwhole-popcorn-kernal

MPAA Rating: PG-13        Length: 105 minutes

Age Appropriate For: 14+. This comedy about nosy neighbors who end up entangled in a spy plot with the perfect couple next door includes a variety of humor, including gross bathroom humor, jokes about torture, and characters getting drunk and acting ridiculous; a variety of sexually themed content, including some implied sex scenes and women wearing revealing lingerie; some cursing; and a variety of violence, including shootouts, car chases, poison darts, and a sequence with a venomous snake. Also some vaguely xenophobic jokes sprinkled throughout.

‘Keeping Up With the Joneses’ is a low-stakes comedy that will win you over with its familiar charms. The cast’s commitment to this zaniness makes the story of suburban spycraft more enjoyable than you would initially expect.

Family Movie Review: Jack Reacher: Never Go Back (PG-13)

Kernel Rating (out of 5): whole-popcorn-kernalwhole-popcorn-kernal

MPAA Rating: PG-13       Length: 118 minutes

Age Appropriate For: 14+. Lots and lots of action violence, including fist-fights, beatings, shootouts, execution-style killings, car chases, explosions, the discussion of torture, and numerous characters dying. Some cursing and rude insults; a shirtless man and a woman in her bra; the main protagonist may have fathered a child with a prostitute; and discussions about prostitution, drinking, and drug use.

‘Jack Reacher: Never Go Back’ is a sequel that didn’t need to happen and that can’t make a case for itself to exist. The twisty-turny plot is overly complicated and aggressively average.

Family Movie Review: Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life (PG)

Kernel Rating (out of 5): whole-popcorn-kernalwhole-popcorn-kernalhalf-popcorn-kernal

MPAA Rating: PG       Length: 92 minutes

Age Appropriate For: 10+. This film based on the popular children’s book series is about an artistic middle school student who chafes under the many rules of his new school and who decides to wage a war against his new principal. Recurring animation sequences that include characters drawn as zombies; some bullying; some rule-breaking involved with pulling off the pranks; a crush between two teenagers; some kissing; some rude jokes and bathroom humor; and the mention of a character who passed away.

‘Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life’ attempts to channel the subversive cool of ‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Off’ in its story about a teenage boy bucking against the rules of his middle school. There are some good character relationships and amusing jokes here, but the film tries a bit too hard.

Family Movie Review: Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children (PG-13)

Kernel Rating (out of 5): whole popcorn kernalwhole popcorn kernalwhole popcorn kernal

MPAA Rating: PG-13        Length: 127 minutes

Age Appropriate For: 12+. This film based on the popular children’s book skews older in this adaptation, and would be best for tweens and older. A good amount of fantasy violence, with monsters who are all tongues and tentacles, a battle sequence between those monsters and reanimated skeletons, and some bullying and nightmarish imagery; some bullying; some kissing and young teen crushes; a few curse words; and adults smoke and drink.

The first installment of the popular children’s series gets the Tim Burton treatment in ‘Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children.’ The imagery is strong, but the film is overly complicated and flubs the ending.
