Family Movie Review: Moana (PG)

Kernel Rating (out of 5): whole-popcorn-kernalwhole-popcorn-kernalwhole-popcorn-kernalwhole-popcorn-kernalhalf-popcorn-kernal

MPAA Rating: PG       Length: 103 minutes

Age Appropriate For: 8+. The latest from Disney focuses on the journey a chief’s daughter to restore health and prosperity to her island, and it subtly and smartly addresses environmental change and the human role in climate change in various ways that children will understand; there are various action sequences, including a few dangerous fights with monsters like gigantic crabs and lava beasts; a beloved character passes away; a flashback to a tragic scene where a character drowns; and some bathroom humor.

Disney adds another best-of-2016 movie to theaters this year with ‘Moana,’ the latest ‘princess’ film that addresses issues of identity and environment with grace, intelligence, and enthusiasm. ‘Moana’ demands to be seen in 3D, a spectacular visual affair that pairs perfectly with its smart story.

Family Movie Review: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (PG-13)

Kernel Rating (out of 5): whole-popcorn-kernalwhole-popcorn-kernalwhole-popcorn-kernal

MPAA Rating: PG-13        Length: 133 minutes

Age Appropriate For: 12+. This film takes place in the world of “Harry Potter,” but in New York City after World War I. Lots and lots of action sequences, including destroyed buildings, wand duels, a scene where a witch is almost executed in a vat of acid, and a few people die; some disturbing stuff, including the implied beating of a boy by his mother; some very lightly sexually themed jokes and bathroom humor; a few romantic subplots and one kiss; and a variety of beasts, some of which could be frightening, including one that looks like a neon bat and another that is a whirling pool of blackness.

The next franchise in the ‘Harry Potter’ universe kicks off with ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,’ which tries to combine a light-hearted heist with the rise of dark fascism. The combination doesn’t quite work, and the film doesn’t build enough stable ground.

Family Movie Review: Doctor Strange (PG-13)

Kernel Rating (out of 5): whole-popcorn-kernalwhole-popcorn-kernalwhole-popcorn-kernal

MPAA Rating: PG-13       Length: 11 minutes

Age Appropriate For: 14+. Typical Marvel movie stuff: lots of action sequences, including a violent car crash in slow motion, lots of hand-to-hand fighting, a character is beheaded, others are stabbed, and still others are killed in various ways. Some cursing; some sexual tension between the protagonist and his former girlfriend; some surgery scenes that are detailed with blood, including an up-close shot of someone receiving stitches and another of the protagonist’s hands swollen, bloody, and full of pins; and some frightening, nightmarish imagery in a “dark dimension” in space.

The latest film in the Marvel cinematic universe, ‘Doctor Strange,’ is the weirdest to date—and that’s a good thing. But while the CGI effects are impressive, the character development is insufficient.

Family Movie Review: Trolls (PG)

Kernel Rating (out of 5): whole-popcorn-kernalwhole-popcorn-kernalwhole-popcorn-kernal

MPAA Rating: PG        Length: 92 minutes

Age Appropriate For: 8+. This movie, inspired by the once-popular Trolls dolls, follows the longtime war between the cute, colorful Trolls and the monstrous, evil Bergens, who eat the former. A few different scary scenes, like the Trolls running away from the Bergens, the Bergens trying to eat the trolls, and various character deaths; some nudity in the form of characters’ butts; some romantic tension between a couple of Trolls and a couple of Bergens, declarations of love, and hugs; and some rude jokes and bathroom humor.

‘Trolls’ is aggressively cute, an amalgamation of adorable characters and colorful locations that moves at a frantic pace. It will amuse, but its reliance on romantic love as the solution to every problem is frustratingly basic.

Family Movie Review: Long Way North (PG)

Kernel Rating (out of 5): whole-popcorn-kernalwhole-popcorn-kernalwhole-popcorn-kernalhalf-popcorn-kernal

MPAA Rating: PG       Length: 81 minutes

Age Appropriate For: 8+. The story is about a teenage girl traveling to the North Pole to find her missing grandfather; there are some emotionally heavy themes, including the grandfather’s absence and the girl’s friction with her parents; some rude jokes, including bathroom humor and some disparaging comments about girls; some flirtation between the teen girl protagonist and a teen boy, and a scene of CPR mouth-to-mouth; and some danger in the form of a hungry polar bear.

The gorgeously animated ‘Long Way North’ tells a simple story of a young woman’s coming of age during her search for her lost grandfather. The film’s attention to detail visually evens out some of its narrative clichés, making this a must-watch for families with imaginative girls.
