HearTheCrunchGrab an apple and take a bite on Maryland Day, March 25, at 10 a.m. to be part of Hear the Maryland Crunch!

Thousands of Marylanders will crunch an apple together to raise awareness of how school breakfast can alleviate childhood hunger. Hear the Maryland Crunch is a fun an educational event that includes a state-wide, synchronized bite into an apple. Schools and other partners are participating in the event to spread the word that every child in Maryland should have access to a healthy breakfast.

"Here in Maryland, we have made a commitment to ensure that every child has access to the nutrition they need to thrive," said Gov. Martin O'Malley. "That's why I hope you will join me, and thousands of your fellow Marylanders, in participating in Hear the Maryland Crunch on Tuesday, March 25. Together, we can make sure every child in our state has access to a nutritious breakfast each morning."

More than 2,300 Marylanders from across the state have signed up to Hear the Maryland Crunch, including O'Malley, U.S. Senator Ben Cardin, Congressman John Delaney, Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake and more. Anne Arundel and Howard county schools are also participating.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, nearly 13 percent of all Maryland households struggle with hunger, and lack access to adequate food to help them live an active and healthy life. Increasing participation in School Breakfast – which reaches 56.5 of low-income students in Maryland for every 100 students that receive school lunch – would help end childhood hunger, as well as boost learning and test scores, improve attendance and student behavior and improve overall student health.

"As we work to strengthen every classroom and every school, we recognize the importance of school breakfast programs. We know that hungry students don't learn as well as they could, and we also know that there are documented connections between school breakfast participation and academic performance," said Dr. Lillian M. Lowery, Maryland Superintendent of Schools. "That's why we support 'Hear the Maryland Crunch.' We agree with Gov. Martin O'Malley, whose goal it has been to make certain every child in our state starts the day with a nutritious breakfast and enters the classroom ready to learn."
