Spring festivals and fairs offer inexpensive family fun with food, entertainment, crafts and sometimes rides for kids. The National Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington, D.C., kicks off our list of Maryland and D.C. fairs and festivals, which includes all kinds of special events. Find family book festivals and cultural festivals, boat shows and craft shows, spring flings, food and drink festivals, music festivals and pirate weekends.

National Cherry Blossom FesNational-Cherry-Blossom-Festival-Parade-webtival
March 20 – April 12. Daily arts and cultural events celebrating spring in Washington, D.C. and enduring friendship between the US and Japan. Free, some events may require fee. See website for full schedule of events. Venues throughout Washington, D.C.

Spring Fest
March 29. A visit from the Easter Bunny, music, balloon art and more. Free. 1-3pm. Waugh Chapel Towne Centre, Crofton.

Anne Arundel County Fair Flea Market Series
April 11. New and used items for sale, including household goods, kids' toys, tools, garden equipment, computers, electronics, party plan vendors and more. Free. 8am-2pm. Anne Arundel County Fairgrounds, Crownsville.

St. Charles Running Festival
April 11. Three different race events, kids' activities and Southern Maryland Blue Crabs Baseball Fun Fest to benefit local charities. $10-45 to race, Fun Fest free. 8:30am. Regency Furniture Stadium, Waldorf.

Hunt Valley Spring Festival
April 12. Ravens players, music, vendors, kids activities, a pet zone and more. Free. 11am-4pm. The Hunt Valley Towne Centre, Cockeysville.

Anacostia River Festival
April 12. Official closing of the 2015 National Cherry Blossom Festival. Hands-on art projects, music, workshops, bike parades and more. Free. Noon-4pm. Anacostia Park, Washington D.C.

Sugarloaf Crafts Festival
April 17-19. 250+ artisans show and sell handcrafted work, plus children's activities, demonstrations, live music and food. $8-10. Children under 12 free. 10am-6pm Friday and Saturday, 10am-5pm Sunday. Montgomery County Fairgrounds, Gaithersburg.

Bethesda Literary Festival
April 17-19. Readings by literary personalities, writing and poetry contests, family and children's activities and more. Free. See website for schedule. Venues throughout downtown Bethesda.

Bay Bridge Boat Show
April 17-19. Demo boat rides, simulated paddle and surfboard rides, children's activities, over 200 brokerage boats, equipment and accessory vendors, food and more. $12. Children 12 and under free. Fri. and Sat., 10am-6pm; Sun., 10am-5pm Sunday. Bay Bridge Marina, Stevensville.

Running Hare Vineyard and Calvert Brewing Company's Spring Festival

2015 Children's Discovery Fair

Brain Health Fair
April 18. Ask a neurologist, exhibit hall, blood pressure screenings, activities for kids and teens, science fair, hold a human brain, interactive walk-through brain, giveaways, free bike helmet giveaway, epilepsy detection dogs to greet. Lilac Festival

Sensory Friendly Safety Fair
April 19. K-9 safety demonstrations, meet McGruff the dog, moon bounce, sand art and more. A sensory, quiet area will be available. 2-5pm. Ruth Eason School, Millersville.

April 20. Community celebration and outdoor festival featuring live music, food vendors, exhibitors, children's activities, free classes and more. Free, some events may require fee. 11am-5pm. Druid Hill Park, Baltimore.

Earth Day Fair
April 22. Learn about recycling, renewable energy and eco-friendly living with educational displays and interactive demonstrations. Free. 11am-2pm. University of Maryland Baltimore Washington Medical Center, Glen Burnie.

Annapolis Spring Sailboat Show

Johns Hopkins Spring Fair

Celtic Festival and Highland Gathering
April 25. Maryland's oldest Celtic festival featuring live music and dance, craft and country-dance demonstrations, historic displays, Celtic market and more. $15-20. Children 12 and under free. 10am-6pm. Jefferson Park and Museum, St. Leonard.

Montpelier Festival of Herbs, Tea and the Arts
April 25. Arts and crafts vendors, live music, tours, history playground, live animal exhibit, gardening talks, nature walks, art demos and more. Festival is free, tea is $13. 10am-4pm. Montpelier Mansion and Historic Site, Laurel.

Broccoli City Festival

Spring Craft Festival

Annapolis Spring Fling
April 26. Old-fashioned street festival featuring vendors, food, children's activities, dining and live music. Free. 10am-5pm. Maryland Avenue and State Circle, Annapolis.

Fairy and Gnome Home Festival
April 26. Children's play area, make your own fairy houses and gnome homes, meet Fairy Queen Ambrosia and Princess Cricket, face painting, bubbles, costumes, refreshments and more. $5. Members and children 2 and under free. Noon-4pm. Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center, Solomons.

Earth, Water and Faith Festival
