In middle school, Roxana Hadadi was a cosmetics-scorning tomboy; in high school, a glitter eye shadow- and black nail polish-loving trend kid; in college, obsessively committed to dying her hair unruly colors that upset her mom. Now a bit older and a bit more mature, she's trying to figure out what hair, body and cosmetics products will work for her, you and your family in About Face, Chesapeake Family's new beauty blog — and she'll leave the sparkle makeup and neon highlights in the past. Roxana also writes movie reviews for Chesapeake Family's Popcorn Parents blog.

About Face: Favorite nail polishes for summer 2014—and a farewell

NailPolishRoundup4 ChesapeakeFamilyAboutFaceAs I sign off from About Face, let’s end where it all started: nail polish. Summer nail polishes from OPI, Nicole by OPI, Laqa and Co., and more will sparkle up your fingers and toes this summer.

By Roxana Hadadi

Dear About Face readers, thank you so much for the past three years. Since this blog launched with Chesapeake Family magazine in 2011, I’ve appreciated your attention and your feedback, and as we wrap up About Face this week—this column is the last for About Face—I want to thank you. I hope my reviews, swatches, and recommendations each week have been helpful to you, and I’m so grateful to have connected with you in this way. Again, thank you, thank you.

And for the final installment of About Face, I wanted to return to where this whole thing started: nail polish. It was my near-fanatical passion with nail polish that got this blog started, and it only makes sense to end it where it began. So, here goes: my favorite nail polish picks for this summer, from brands like OPI, Nicole by OPI, and Nails Inc. So much glitter! I make no apologies for that.

As one final salute, I raise my nail polish bottle to you, dear readers. For my choices, read on!

About Face: Drugstore beauty picks for Memorial Day weekend and beyond

DrugstoreRoundup2 ChesapeakeFamilyAboutFaceMemorial Day weekend is the unofficial kickoff of summer; are you ready? If you’re in the mood for some seasonal pick-me-ups, peruse your local drugstore for new items from Dove, Burt’s Bees, Hard Candy, and more.

By Roxana Hadadi

Ah, three-day weekend! With Memorial Day right around the corner and Monday a holiday for practically everyone, summer is coming to us quite quickly. Is your beauty routine ready?

I already feel my winter skin cream feeling heavy on my face and lipstick getting sticky, and I wouldn’t mind some new things to switch things up. And with drugstore brands unveiling their summer items quite steadily, there are a variety of items to choose from for hair, bath, and beauty. Hard Candy, John Frieda, Burt’s Bees—there’s something for everyone.

For my picks of what you should look for during your next trip to the drugstore, read on!

About Face: Review, swatches of Make Up For Ever HD Blush, Aqua Matic

MakeUpForEverHDBlush ChesapeakeFamilyAboutFaceMake Up For Ever launches two new products this spring: HD Blush and the Aqua Matic eye pencil. Do they deliver the intense pigmentation and long wear-time you can expect from the brand?

By Roxana Hadadi

Looking for something new for summer? Make Up For Ever has you covered with the brand’s new HD Blush and Aqua Matic eye pencil. Both available in a wide range of shades, they’re two of MUFE’s most recently released products for 2014.

Keeping in line with MUFE’s philosophy of intense pigmentation and long wear-time, the product descriptions include words like “flawless” and “unbelievable.” But are they worthy of such praise? I was provided with samples of both products to test, and I’ve swatched and reviewed them. For my thoughts on MUFE’s new HD Blush and Aqua Matic, read on!

About Face: Treat yourself this Mother’s Day with Korres, Clinique, and more

MothersDayGiftGuide3 ChesapeakeFamilyAboutFaceHappy Mother’s Day! With the annual holiday coming up this weekend, treat yourself with bath, body, hair, and cosmetics gifts. Whether it’s blush from Clinique, bath bombs from LUSH, or exfoliating scrub from H2O, grab something good for yourself.

By Roxana Hadadi

How do you normally celebrate Mother’s Day? Are you a flowers-and-card person? More about chocolate? Dinner with your family? Any of those options is, of course, totally valid. But treating yourself with cosmetics items—I see nothing wrong with that!

This year, I’ve structured our Mother’s Day gift guide with, of course, you in mind. What would you like to use in the bath, or on your face? How could your day be as stress-free as possible? What kind of pampering do you deserve? Because you deserve it all.

For a roundup of our Mother’s Day gift guide picks, read on!

About Face: Review of lip balm, lip gloss from ILIA Beauty

IliaLipProducts ChesapeakeFamilyAboutFaceCanadian beauty company ILIA offers a variety of lip products, from conditioners to glosses, with an environmentally conscious mentality. Should you pick anything up from the brand?

By Roxana Hadadi

Have you ever seen the ILIA brand? I wasn’t familiar with ILIA before receiving some of their products for review, but maybe that’s because I don’t shop at Barneys or Net-A-Porter in my daily life. I’m more of a Target person, honestly. But even though ILIA was initially outside of my sphere of cosmetic knowledge, the self-described “niche color cosmetic line” is worth your exploration. With its focus on lip color and slick packaging, ILIA is deceptively simplistic, but the brand’s array of lip colors is extensive.

For review, I received a variety of ILIA products: a lip care product, a lip moisturizer, and a couple of lip glosses. For my thoughts on ILIA, read on!
