6 ways to keep the kids from getting bored this week

Looking for a way to keep your kids from getting bored as the summer heats up? Here are our top six picks from our post of summer fun ideas every day this summer.

1. Go swimming at Glenn Dale Splash Park — Waterslides, spraying mushrooms, floating animals and a shallow pool just for toddlers are just a few of the fun features at Glenn Dale Splash Park in Prince George’s County. The kids will have a blast cooling off at this pool open to the public.

2. Take the kids to a petting farm — Kids love getting up close to animals and a petting farm is the perfect place. There are several farms in the area that have animals that kids can feed along with other fun things to do from pony rides to playgrounds.

3. Tubing at Gunpowder River — Rent a tube, hike a ways up stream and then float down the river at a leisurely pace. The water is calm and knee-deep in most spots so it’s perfect for all ages. There’s no better way to keep cool on a hot summer’s day.

4. Explore nature at Irvine Nature Center — Go for a hike, visit the center’s resident animals and play in a natural playground with hollowed out logs, uprooted trees and more. It’s a great place to teach kids about the importance of environmental literacy with plenty of fun activities.

5. Hike and swim at Cunningham Falls State Park — Take the kids on a day or overnight adventure to see Maryland’s largest cascading waterfall. Hike along mountain trails and swim in Hunting Creek Lake where lifeguards are on duty most days.

6. Visit a butterfly garden — Brookside Gardens has live butterfly and caterpillar exhibit that the kids will love. Learn about metamorphosis, the role of butterflies in ecosystem and how to draw more into your own garden. Butterflies flit around the exhibit and might even land right on you.
