6 ways to save your marriage — FranklyStein

I got an e-mail the other day at work that caught my attention. I delete dozens of e-mails a day, but this one I opened. In bold letters it promised “6 Unconventional Things You Should Do to Save Your Marriage.”

My marriage isn’t in jeopardy, but it’s not perfect. Life in the Stein house is so crazy these days that there’s little time to work on marriage. And busyness creates stress, which creates tension, which is never good for a marriage. So I’m not above admitting that maybe my marriage could use a little “saving.” So I opened the e-mail and found several nuggets of wisdom inside that I felt compelled to share.

The e-mail was from a guy named Mort Fertel, a marriage expert who is the creator of the Marriage Fitness Tele-Boot Camp and author of “Marriage Fitness.” I’d never heard of him but turns out he’s a local guy. He lives in Baltimore with his wife and 5 kids (even a set of triplets). So I’m sure he knows what my life is like.

Fertel says his tips often run counter to many ideas existing within our culture’s zeitgeist.
“Much of the advice people get about their marriage problems is wrong. It sounds good. It makes sense. The problem is: it usually doesn’t work,” he explains. “Reconciling a broken marriage is tricky. The process is not intuitive. You really have to be careful that the advice you’re following has proved to achieve the outcome you’re looking for.”

Keep reading for Fertel’s six tips.
