This summer is a hot one, and air conditioning isn’t always in the cards. Luckily, there are a few other ways to stay cool. Here are a few activities and accessories that can turn down the heat in your home or on the go.
1. Umbrella
The umbrella was invented 4,000 years ago, and it’s for more than just staying dry. This portable accessory can function as a heat shield between you and the powerful rays of our closest star. While regular, non-reflective umbrellas help, sun umbrellas (parasols) can keep you even cooler. Standing in the sun with no shade can make you feel up to 15 degrees warmer, according to the National Weather Service.
2. Ice on demand
Staying hydrated is a must, and if you do it right, it can keep you comfortable on a hot day, too. There’s no substitute for water in the heat. Having ice in your drink can boost the refreshing feeling you get when you take a sip. Have a pitcher of ice water or cool lemonade available in the fridge during the summer whenever possible.
3. Cool clothes
Choosing clothes to keep you cool goes beyond considering the shape of the garment — it’s actually more about the material. Cotton, linen, wool, silk, nylon and polyester are a few fabrics recognized for their merits in keeping us cool. When you pick a summer wardrobe for your family, look a little closer at the clothing tags for the materials, or sort by material when shopping online.
4. Blackout curtains
Close the blinds and shut the curtains to keep sunlight from heating up the inside of your home. Blackout curtains, which are drapes designed to block sunlight and artificial light, can reduce the amount of light and heat entering your home through windows.
5. Dehumidifier
While running a dehumidifier might not actually lower the temperature of the room, it can make your room feel cooler by decreasing humidity. When there’s a lot of moisture in the air, the rate of evaporation from the body decreases—making it harder to cool off, according to the National Weather Service. Portable one-room dehumidifiers are available starting at $50.
6. Go for a swim
Even in the sun, water helps the body cool down. Spread on water-resistant sunscreen and take a splash in a local pool. By swimming, your family can stay active without getting hot and sweaty.
7. Siesta
A short nap after lunch can be a nice way to “skip” the hottest part of the day and restore your energy for a fun evening.
