Am I the only one who comes up with great gift ideas right after the holidays are over?
The weeks leading up to Christmas I think my head is just too full of party planning, activity scheduling, classmate gift making, cooking prep, and the other zillion things we moms do during the month of December. I envy those people who pick up thoughtful gifts for their friends and family all year long so when Christmas comes, they’re set! I used to do that before we had kids. I used to do a lot of things before we had kids, like, sleep.
But it’s true, usually the day after Christmas I get these awesome gift ideas. Probably because I just received some great gifts myself, which inspired me to step up my game for next year. This year our parents got us some very thoughtful, much needed gifts. Practical things that we wanted but wouldn’t have bought ourselves because, well, kids. They asked what we wanted, and even looked up my Amazon Wish List which I didn’t realize I had made public! Sometimes I wish everyone had Amazon Wish Lists that I could peruse. But everyone doesn’t, so I’m going to help us all out and jot down a few of my favorite gift ideas for moms.
1) Gift Cards
Not to be stereotypical, but we moms love to shop. Whether it’s a leisurely stroll through Target, coffee in hand, or perusing online stores in our PJ’s from the couch. I take my job as the care-taker of our children and home very seriously, trying to be frugal and find good deals whenever I can, so when someone gives me a gift card it’s such a treat to be able to spend money that isn’t mine on something fun! Restaurant gift cards are fabulous too but should always be given along with a certificate for free babysitting, in my opinion.
We moms spend a large majority of our time planning and executing activities for our families. It is so awesome when someone else takes on that job! For my Birthday every year my Dad usually gives me tickets to something, like a play, concert, dinner cruise, etc. It’s always something unique that I probably wouldn’t have gotten for myself because, again, kids. But we moms like to do fun things too! This year my friends and I decided that instead of getting gifts for each-other we are getting together at one of our homes to paint wine glasses, enjoy home-made snacks and drinks, and just catch up. Groupon is a great place to find deals on fun outings like snow-tubing, wine tastings, escape rooms, and other unique things. So whether it’s with our family, just with our Hubby, or with a group of girlfriends, an activity is bound to be a greatly appreciated gift.
3) Gift Baskets
Now I’m not talking like a Hickory Farms sausage and cheese set, though those are certainly tasty, but a gift basket tailored to moms. Maybe it’s filled with self-pampering goodies like bath bombs, candle, and a good new book. Or like my sister in-law does, a ‘Date Night at Home’ basket that includes snacks, drinks, and movie rental codes for Redbox. The contents can be personalized for anyone’s personality, and after it’s empty, you have a handy new basket which is always needed to collect all the random things these kids bring home.
4) Random Acts of Kindness
Maybe it’s just me, but sometimes the best gift I get is something as simple as a home-cooked meal, a clean van, all the laundry washed, or my pantry organized. Call me old fashioned, but you just can’t put a price tag on kindness.
So now you have a few ideas to get a jump on next year’s holiday gifts, or maybe drop some hints to the Hubby for Valentine’s Day!
