About Face: Bite Beauty Cosmetics Line

lipsDon’t be scared of Bite Beauty. The beauty line with the antioxidant equivalent of five glasses of red wine will make you tipsy with joy.

So far at About Face we’ve covered shower gels from LUSH and Rose Salve from C.O. Bigelow — items that we suggested could be shared with family members and relatives alike. But this week we’re focusing strictly on moms with a look at Bite Beauty, a cosmetics line whose products include resveratrol, a component of red wine with powerful antioxidant effects that “assist the body in the fight against free radicals,” according to the company. Each of Bite Beauty’s seven products — Luminous Crème Lipstick, High Pigment Pencil, Lip Shine, Lip Rouge, SPF 15 Sheer Balm, Vitamin Gel and Superfruit Butter — has 5 mg of resveratrol, the antioxidant equivalent of five glasses of wine, which apparently can help reduce wrinkles and fine lines in lips. Who knew? Go ahead and get crunk, ladies!

But seriously, some of Bite Beauty’s products will make you feel all giggly and bubbly — think the sensation you get when sipping a glass of Champagne, but in cosmetics form — while others will be a dud. For this post, I tested four different Bite Beauty offerings: Lip Shine in Saffron and Pink Grapefruit, Vitamin Gel in Ginger and SPF 15 Sheer Balm in Claret. Here’s how it went down:

Lip Shine in Saffron and Pink Grapefruit: Bite Beauty says this super-shiny gloss, with your typical wand applicator, is “infused with time-released jojoba beads and an antioxidant polyphenol complex” meant to hydrate lips, and I’d say that’s totally accurate. Though both colors — Saffron is a cherry red that leans a bit orange, Pink Grapefruit is a milky light pink — look menacingly pigmented in the tube, they go on pleasantly sheer, smell wonderful (like Starburst candies!) and last between two to three hours on the lips. That’s not the longest wear time, but since the product smells, tastes and feels so good, I didn’t mind reapplying. Lip Shine is also available in the colors Beet, Cinnamon, Melon, Plum, Prosecco, Raspberry, Sante and Vintage.

Vitamin Gel in Ginger: I’ll be honest, I was a little hesitant about this. First, gel? Second, ginger? I thought it would taste like I was applying the congealed leftover sauce in a Chinese food takeout container onto my lips, but instead Vitamin Gel (housed in a squeezable tube with a slanted tip on top) is my new obsession. Bite Beauty says the gel “combines the benefits of micronized multivitamins with healthy organic fruit juices … mood-enhancing essential oils … and a high dose of Vitamin C [that provides] a natural pick-me-up.” I don’t know if Vitamin Gel necessarily made me smile more, but the stuff is addictive: It smells tart and sweet, goes on smooth and really feels like its depositing moisture onto my lips. It’s sheer and gently shiny, and I can see it becoming a real go-to product for mothers and daughters. Vitamin Gel is also available in the flavors Blood Orange, Pineapple, Pink Grapefruit and Mint.

SPF 15 Sheer Balm in Claret: Maybe every company has to have one product that just doesn’t live up to expectations, and unfortunately I think SPF 15 Sheer Balm is Bite Beauty’s. The company says this is “a soothing formula of delicious organic mint and blood orange essential oils,” “liposome complex … and a high dose of resveratrol,” all of which are meant to “add luster and volume.” Really? Because my lips felt dry, parched and incredibly uncomfortable after one, two and many other swipes of Claret. Though Claret is described as an “apple red,” it was more of a purplish color didn’t really translate onto my lips very well, and while I understand the product is meant to be “semi-sheer,” it’s also supposed to have “buildable coverage” — which I didn’t experience. Bummer all around. SPF 15 Sheer Balm is also available in the colors Burgundy, Carmine, Concord, Creme, Sparkling, Starfruit and Violet.

VERDICT: For Lip Shine and Vitamin Gel, A; for SPF 15 Sheer Balm, D. Both Bite Beauty’s Lip Shine and Vitamin Gel felt truly innovative: My lips felt softer and more pampered after using the products, and they lived up to the company’s claims. SPF 15 Sheer Balm, however, was incredibly disappointing and didn’t deliver for me in any way — in fact, it practically did the opposite of what the product description promised.

PRICE: Lip Shine, $20 for 0.12 ounces; Vitamin Gel, $18 for 0.31 ounces; SPF 15 Sheer Balm, $19 for 0.10 ounces. The lip gloss price is comparable with other high-end brands, and I think it’s a nice investment product that really stands out. The Vitamin Gel is a bit pricey on its own, but is available in a trio from Sephora for a cheaper price. The SPF 15 Sheer Balm is just not worth it.

AVAILABILITY: Exclusively at Sephora, online or in various locations; call for availability in stores.
