Sonia Kashuk has a core nail polish formula which gets a few new shades every year, and this spring, the brand added seven new shades, including Pink Slip, Sitting Pretty, and Queen of Hearts. According to the brand, Pink Slip is “a chic bubblegum pink”; Sitting Pretty is “a vibrant purple”; and Queen of Hearts is “a show-stopping fuchsia.”
These shades are all quite feminine, especially Pink Slip, but I found they definitely take three coats to become opaque. Without that third coat, they all apply a bit patchy, and the shimmer in Sitting Pretty ends up being negatively affected. If you go into application with the mentality of three thin coats, though, you’ll have better luck.
More edgy shades are in the Limited Edition “State of the Art” Nail Art Set, with the shades By the Sea, a deep blue; Contessa, an aqua blue; and Fairy Princess, a mint. These shades all had crème finishes, and the set comes with two mini brushes, one that has a square-shaped, broad, flat applicator, and the other with a thinner, more paintbrush-like applicator.
The polishes in the set I really liked—although the shades aren’t particularly unique, they work well together and are quite summery. The brushes, though, I couldn’t get behind. Although I appreciate the longer handle, they really do seem too much like paintbrushes, and that makes them a bit bulky and difficult to handle. I had marginal success with the thinner brush, which I think will work well for a polka dot nail art applicator, but the thicker one I just couldn’t find a way to use effectively. The set, overall, was somewhat hit or miss, and I wish it could have been packaged without the brushes at all.
Overall, however, I would pick up some of Sonia Kashuk’s new spring shade additions to the core nail polish line; it’s not a perfect formula but an affordable one with some very pretty, work-appropriate shades. The limited edition set might only be worthwhile if you’re looking specifically for those blue shades; otherwise, the brushes aren’t that great.
VERDICT: B+ for Sonia Kashuk Nail Colour; C for Sonia Kashuk Limited Edition State of the Art Nail Art Set, because the polishes are good but the brushes are basically worthless.
