About Face: Take ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ to your nails with the ombre effect

OmbrePolishes ChesapeakeFamilyAboutFaceReady to jump on the ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ bandwagon, which now includes an album of classical music, plans for a movie, and clothing and household items coming to a store near you? Put a personal spin on the trend with an ombre-inspired nail look.

I haven’t read the “Fifty Shades of Grey” series by E. L. James, and I don’t plan to. Ever. Nope, no desire to do that. And when the movies come out, I won’t see those, either. I can’t ignore their ridiculous popularity, but my reaction to them is much like my original thoughts on the “Twilight” series that inspired James: I’ll pass.

But yes, “Fifty Shades of Grey” is everywhere: There will be a movie adaptation, the series is spawning other copycat novels, and James recently signed a licensing deal that means official clothing, household items, and other products will be hitting stores soon. And since we can’t escape it, I’ve decided to let the series inspire my beauty regimen—but in a very literal way. As in, I’m putting a bunch of different “shades of grey” on my nails to achieve an ombre effect with my polish.

A goofy way to bring “Fifty Shades of Grey” into my cosmetics, I know. But I adore the ombre effect, the gradual contrast from a dark shade to a lighter one, and I think it’s a fun way to try on a bunch of different polishes at once to see what works for you. And the effect can be done in any color family, not just grey—for my picks in the brown, pink, and green color families, read on!
