Chesapeake Family wins 9 writing, design and digital media awards

BBEverything cover WChesapeake Family won nine awards in the Parenting Media Association Design and Editorial Awards Competition at the organization's annual conference in St. Petersburg, Florida. March 3-5, 2017.

“This is great news for us, and I am proud of my team,” said Donna Jefferson, publisher of Chesapeake Family Life. “This international recognition is a great boost. We work hard to bring families all the information they need, through all platforms from print to web to social media, and this is wonderful feedback.”

Chesapeake Family won five first place “Gold” awards in design, editorial and digital media including best use of social media.

A story on parenting advice from professional athletes featuring Raven's Steve Smith, Sr. won a gold in the non-traditional story form category. A story on the medical condition known as POTS by Pete Pichaske won for general feature writing. The Big Book for Families won for best cover (above), and editor Betsy Stein won best blog for her weekly online parenting column, “FrankilyStein.”

The magazine also won a silver award for overall writing.

“Chesapeake Family has an appealing way with ledes, one of the hallmarks of the writing in the publication,” the judges said. “Well-chosen words combined with the right delivery is an effective technique. The beginnings are often original and surprising ... This is a mark of excellence in writing.”

A silver award also went to writer Laura Barnhardt Cech in the service feature category for her story on helping kids handle heavy topics.

The magazine, designed by Jenny Patrick C., took bronze for overall design and the design of the Family Fun section.

“Fast pacing that arises from breaking stories into smaller segments highlights this magazine,” the judges said of the design. “Strong cover photos lead readers inside.”
