Allegany County

Must-Sees
Notable for towns such as Cumberland and Frostburg, Allegany County is a prime destination for train enthusiasts. It’s home to the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad, which has been noted by outlets like USAToday and Travel Channel for its stunning views of the Allegheny Mountain Range. Train rides typically depart from Cumberland, with a 90-minute layover in Frostburg to shop and eat before returning.
The area is also home to many notable historic sites, including a cabin that George Washington once used as a headquarters, the LaVale Toll House, and local history museums such as the Allegany Museum, Evergreen Heritage Center and Thrasher Carriage Museum.
Local Nature
This northwestern area is nestled in the mountains, so there are plenty of parks and natural trails where visitors can stop and smell the flowers. The C&O Canal National Historical Park & Towpath offers access to the Potomac River and a hiking and biking trail that stretches through several notable landmarks like the Paw Paw Tunnel. The Great Allegheny Passage is gorgeous during the fall, but is popular for cross-country skiing during the winter and hiking the rest of the year.
