After school engineering classes for kids in AA County

engineeringForKidsWebThanks to an Annapolis couple, kids in Anne Arundel County can now study aerospace engineering, or civil engineering and maybe even mechanical engineering or robotics if they want.

This spring, Lauren Rakvic, a county teacher, and her husband Ryan, an engineer, bought a franchise of the Virginia-based educational program Engineering for Kids, and they are offering classes in the county for the first time. There were already franchises in Calvert, Howard and Prince George’s counties.

Hands-on engineering for kids

“It’s a cool way to get younger kids into some very hands on engineering,” Lauren Rakvic says. “The founder was a high school teacher and saw a lot of opportunities for science and math in high school but not in elementary and middle.”

The program exposes children 4 to 14 to science, technology, engineering and math and brings it down to a younger student level, Lauren says. They hope to eventually offer a number of different engineering classes including electrical, civil, robotics, mechanical and more.

“We liked that it has a lot of different engineering programs not just one,” Lauren says. “My husband is a computer engineer and loves that it gets to the younger students. I love teaching and giving more hands on exposure.”

The local franchise offered its first class at the Severna Park Community Center on aerospace engineering this spring. In one of the first classes, they made straw rockets, Lauren says. They tested them out and had to figure out what might have made them go farther and faster.

“Kids think there is one right answer but this is more open ended. We can be more free with ideas,” she says.

The Rakvics plan to expand their classes next year to offer after school programs at county schools, Boys & Girls clubs, community centers and more. For details visit the Engineering for Kids website.
