Annapolis student remembered at St. Mary’s graduation and Annapolis Leukemia Cup

Sarah McMahonWhen the Class of 2013 at St. Mary’s High School in Annapolis processed in for graduation on May 23, they each carried an orange flower in memory of their former classmate, Sarah McMahon, who died last July from acute myeloid leukemia.

“The senior class came up with the idea. They wanted to remember her at graduation,” said Christine Bervid, communications coordinator at the school.

The seniors put the orange flowers — the color for leukemia — in a vase in front of a portrait of Sarah, who’s name was also called out as a member of the graduating class, Bervid said. The gesture meant the world to Sarah’s family.

“It was a beautiful graduation ceremony,” wrote Debbie McMahon, Sarah’s mother, in an email. “Having this tribute to her up on stage with her peers was unbelievably heartwarming. I felt her graduating with all her friends and them with her and they sailed into their future together.”
