I don’t believe in that tired adage,
boys will be boys.
A blanket excuse.
A shield for letting them get away with the things that girls aren’t supposed to do.
I wish we would say,
boys will be men.
And raise them accordingly.
I wish we could take all the boys by the hand
and tell them that we love them.
If there is a shortage of anything in this world
it is men who were not told as boys how much they were loved.
As for my boys
I will talk to them.
I will show them the words.
I will give them the depths of my love and pride.
I will give them the safe space to let their truths be heard.
I will give them the room to roam and grow.
I will give them kindness and respect.
I will expect from them kindness and respect.
I will remind them that the power of a man
is not based just upon how he speaks but how he listens.
I will play with them.
I will dance with them.
I will hold them.
I will believe them.
I will praise them.
I will embrace who they are.
I will not scold them for their tears.
I will whisper and shout and be their advocate.
I will model how a woman should be treated.
I will give them boundaries.
I will teach them the power of the word no.
I will teach them that they will ask for permission.
I will teach them that the way they respond to the nos and the stops are everything.
I will teach them to open doors and mop floors and how to cook.
I will teach them that sensitivity outweighs strength.
I will hear them.
I will hold them.
I will have high expectations.
I will watch them, eyes wide open.
They will be men soon enough that can make the world better. Or worse.
As for my boys, there is only one option.
I expect nothing less.
