Oakleigh Forest, located nine miles north of Annapolis and is one of the best places to live in Maryland. With only 158 homes, a park, a playground, a pool, a kiddy pool, picnic pavilion, bathhouse, and a waterfront with a boat launch and slips, Oakleigh Forest residents enjoy many activities with their neighbors. Each year numerous community events are sponsored in the neighborhood.
The community association is run by volunteer residents and their goal is to make “Oakleigh Forest continue to be a safe, enjoyable place to live for people of all ages.” Membership is required to participate in all of the amenities and forbid the ownership of chickens, cows and ponies.
Oakleigh Forest was established in 1957 and the first house built in 1959. The association pool was built in 1961. The closest shopping and restaurants are on Route 2 only a couple of miles away. A car is necessary as there is no public transportation available. There are two public libraries within five miles of the community.
1,230 people live in 158 single family homes in Oakleigh Forest. Children under the age of 18 live in 43% of the households. The minority population of the community is 15% as compared to 41.8% in the entire state of Maryland.
The community pool sponsors a swim team for youth. They compete as part of the East Severna Park Swim League. Kids can also participate in the Green Hornets, the team of the Greater Severna Park Athletic Association, a non-profit youth sports organization for children ages 3 to 18. Competition in eleven different sports is available. And waterfront access on Cattail Creek, a tributary of the Magothy, is not only for boating but also fishing and crabbing.
