Why Would I Want to Feed the Birds?

Watching and feeding birds is a popular hobby across North America (second only to gardening).  In fact, 81 million people feed the birds and watch wildlife in their own backyards. It is an excellent way to relax and enjoy the natural world. But now more than ever, the birds need your help. Since 1970, bird populations have been on a decline with nearly three billion fewer birds across North America.

Getting Started

We invite you to visit the new Wild Birds Unlimited of Edgewater, where you will find the information, products and services to help you get started feeding the birds and support songbird populations in your very own backyard. Wild Birds Unlimited (WBU) specializes in bringing people and nature together with bird feeding and nature products, expert advice, and educational events. Visit during our grand opening, happening all month long. Be sure to register for one of our fabulous giveaways while visiting, like FREE seed for a year and a WBU shopping spree. Mark your calendar for our big grand opening event on Saturday, March 29. Visit our Facebook page for details at facebook.com/wbuedgewatermd.

What Do I Need to Know About Feeding the Birds?

Not all birdseed is created equal. When you visit any grocery, discount or big box retailer you’ll find some packaged wild birdseed that might look pretty good in the package. It will probably be pretty inexpensive, as well. However, what you may not realize is that most discount seed is full of cereal grains and fillers that birds won’t eat, such as milo, wheat, oats, barley, flax, or canola. You don’t know how long that seed has been sitting around. Wild Birds Unlimited is dedicated to offering fresh, top-quality seed. Our No-Mess seed blends are made from 100% edible seed and have been formulated for the feeding preferences of our local birds. No cereal fillers — just fresh, high-quality seed your birds will love.

Meet the New Owners

Kelly and John Gjovik became Wild Birds Unlimited franchise store owners in September 2024 and are thrilled to now have the door to nature open. John’s professional background for the past 40-plus years has been in the food and beverage industry. Kelly’s professional background was in food and beverage and retail management up until three years ago when Kelly became an employee of Wild Birds Unlimited in La Plata, Maryland. While working there, Kelly quickly fell in love with the whole Wild Birds Unlimited concept. Kelly and John decided to make a long-time dream of being self-employed come true by becoming owners of a Wild Birds Unlimited in hopes of sharing their love and passion for the joy of the outdoors, including bird feeding and bird watching.
