A recent report found that aside from two schools currently operating over capacity, the majority of Calvert County schools are operating at 90% capacity or below.
The two schools in question are Northern Middle School in Owings at 104.7% capacity and Mt. Harmony Elementary School in Owings at 101.6%.
But this seems to be a result of the closure of the original Northern Middle School’s versus a population boom, Calvert County’s Planning and Zoning Team determined in a recent report on Adequate Public Facilities (APF).
Why It Matters
This means that Calvert County Public Schools could support new residents moving to the county if schools are determined to be under-capacity.
The new Northen Middle School opening at the start of the 2026-27 school year is expected to accommodate students who temporarily transferred between schools in the district.
Calvert County’s Department of Planning and Zoning can delay approval of residential housing development based on a lack of adequate school capacity, so ensuring schools remain under capacity is key.
The majority of Calvert County schools are operating at 90% capacity or below, with a few exceptions, the APF report notes. Plum Point Elementary School in Huntingtown and Northern High School in Owings are between 90% and 99.9%.
Notably, the APF’s report does not include temporary or relocatable classrooms at school, such as those taught in on-campus trailers.
