Celebrate the Chinese New Year with the family

The Lunar New Year of the Rooster begins on Jan. 28 and there are plenty of fun things do with kids of all ages.

The holiday lasts for 15 days and people around the world ring in the Lunar New Year (also known as the Chinese New Year) with celebrations of feasting, family reunions and other festivities. In the Annapolis-Baltimore area, there are several fun events planned.

Saturday, Jan. 28

Chinese New Year Jing Ying WJing Ying Institute Open House
The Jing Ying Institute of Kung Fu & Tai Chi in Arnold is kicking off the celebration with a series of workshops starting with a free open house Jan. 28 from 3-4:30 p.m. Enjoy a Chinese Lion Dance, food, family-friendly activities and prizes/giveaways. The Lion Dance performance will be at 3:15 p.m., followed by demonstrations of Tai Chi and Kung Fu forms and weapons. A free Introductory Kung Fu Class will be held from 4-4:45 p.m.

Other activities at Jing Ying over the 15 day celebration include Tai Chi workshop and classes, Tea Tasting, Self Defense Workshop for Women & Teen Girls (benefitting a local domestic violence safe house) and more.

Chinese New Year Celebration

Sunday, Jan. 29

Lunar New Year Festival
Celebrate the Year of the Rooster with art activities and traditional Lunar New Year performances by the Baltimore Chinese School, the Johns Hopkins Lion Dance Troupe, and the Korean dance groups Sang Hee Ju Traditional Dance Company and Stepping Stones. Tuesday, Jan. 31

Chinese Spring Festival
Traditional music, acrobatics and the Peking Opera celebrate the Chinese New Year at Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts. Free. 6 p.m. Hosted by World Artists Experiences. Worldartsits.org

Saturday, Feb. 4

Annual Chinese New Year Celebration
Celebrate the Year of the Rooster at an annual Chinese New Year Celebration. Make Chinese New Year Lucky Charms, see festive dragons, make fortunes, chopstick training and more. Lunar New Year Celebration
A Kennedy Center Family Day of activities and entertainment for all ages based on the Lunar New Year. Activities include paper cutting and Beijing-style applique, a rooster coloring station, dress up at a traditional Chinese costume trunk and pictures at a photo booth. Also watch masters at work with calligraphy, sugar and bottle painting, “bristle dolls” and Chinese makeup. Enjoy performance demonstrations by Beijing acrobats and Chinese musicians, visits from friendly “panda pal” character and more. The events is free. Visit Kennedy-center.org for details.
