Teachers are amazing. Teachers change lives. Teachers are everyday heroes. The Summit School recognizes that teachers today have an important job with big responsibilities and despite systemic challenges, have a great impact on the lives of children. This is an open letter to recognize teachers, especially Summit teachers, and the extraordinary work they do for their students every day.

Dear Teachers,

We know that you probably decided to be a teacher a long time ago because you wanted to help children. Your motivation is noble and inherently good. In today’s world, it has become increasingly difficult to do your job. Yet, you go to school every day and persevere. Summit teachers are a special type of teacher and we would like to celebrate them here.

At Summit, students come to our school after struggling at their previous school. Summit teachers motivate and connect with these students who often have built defense mechanisms around school. Breaking through that barrier, our talented teachers create an environment where students thrive and meet their full potential.  It’s a special combination of dedication, empathy, patience, training, and support systems that make a Summit teacher successful.

Summit’s class sizes are small and grouped by skill level. From the outside, people may think this makes teaching easier. It’s not really easier, it’s more effective. Class sizes are small to allow for our teachers to really focus on each students’ strengths and weaknesses and differentiate where needed. Summit teachers are nimble and able to adjust their lessons based on what they see from their students. They use all the tools in their arsenal of training to figure out exactly what will help their students succeed.

So, no, it’s not easy but for teachers who want to help children, it is incredibly gratifying to see the strides they are making with their students. Progress is motivating for both students and teachers. The sense of teamwork, accomplishment, and community is tangible at Summit. Our team of teachers make our program effective and while it isn’t easy, it’s life-changing for our students with dyslexia and learning differences.

The Summit School’s successes (34 years of operating and hundreds of successful alumni) would not be possible without our talented and dedicated Summit teachers. Thank you to ALL teachers but a very special thank you to Summit Teachers!  You change lives.
