Chesapeake Family Life Wins Big at PMA Awards

Chesapeake Family Life won eleven awards over the weekend at the annual Parenting Media Association conference in St. Petersburg, Florida.

PMA’s Editorial and Design Awards Competition recognizes excellence in journalism, photography and design. Chesapeake Family Life took home eleven big prizes, including Gold for Overall Excellence, Gold for Best Use of Multimedia, Silver for Overall Design and Silver for Overall Writing!

First our biggest award, the Gold for Overall Excellence! Judges said of Chesapeake Family Life: “The innovative mix of content is impressive, as well as the way this publication delivers information in small text packages. From Q&As to subheads to breakouts, the stories are sensibly organized with the time-pressed reader in mind. Design is effective, with colors that pop and graphic elements that help direct readers through a story—the story on teacher salaries is an excellent example. Overall, the publication clearly makes wise use of its resources and provides a valuable asset to its readers.”

In the editorial Department, Katie Riley won a Gold award in the Travel Feature category, for her piece in the June 2018 issue, “Five Classic Mountain Resorts for Families.” The contest judges said it was “a fascinating piece about the unique opportunities Appalachian resorts offer not only for enjoying the mountain outdoors but also for learning about the region’s storied history.”

Our monthly Family Fun column earned a Bronze award in the Family Fun column category. Judges noted that the column “provides a host of imaginative ideas for how parents can keep their little ones entertained with no stress and no strain on the budget. It’s a nice resource for those who sometimes forget to think a little outside the box.”

Plus, Chesapeake Familiy Life earned a Silver for Overall Writing, the judges noting, “Whether families want to catch the travel bug or learn more about supporting a family member with autism, this magazine delivers. It serves as a valuable resource for parents seeking advice and opportunities.”

In the Design categories, Chesapeake Family Life won for:

Best Overall Design (Silver)

The Judges noted that the “iconography, color treatments, and giant pull-quotes are highlights of the design. It’s nice to see minimalist, modern symbols used to help the reader navigate the publication and to disseminate information.”

Best Interior Illustration (Gold) for the Family Favorites article in the August 2018 issue. The illustration by local artist Ellen Byrne “works so well with the layout and typographic layout and design. Everything feels completely harmonious. The bright colors catch the eye, and the floating illustrative elements blur the line of what is layout design, and what is part of the illustration itself.”

Finally, our Standout Students stories and videos (produced by Bethany Swain) won Gold for the Best use of Multimedia! The judges said “These charming video portraits reveal a diverse set of students and accomplishments that reflect a close connection to the local community.”
