Chesapeake Family magazine brought home 11 editorial and design awards from the National Parenting Media Association Annual Convention this past weekend.
The magazine received top honors in its circulation category for overall writing, cover photography, editor’s letters, illustrations, feature writing and an online blog. The 2013-14 Big Book of Education won third place for General Excellence in design and editorial as well as best overall writing.
“I could not be happier with my staff,” said Publisher Donna Jefferson. “We have a great team and have worked hard to produce a magazine and website that will serve our community. Our main goal to serve our readers — to be useful to the parents in our community — but it is nice to get this type of recognition as well.”
The magazine is headed by Editor Betsy Stein and Art Director Jenny Patrick C. Heather Grant is web director and Jeanne Slaughter is in charge of marketing.
Specific awards on the editorial side included second place in the general feature writing category for a story on Maryland moms on surviving cancer by Kristy MacKaben. In Design, first place was earned for the September cover for stock photography (pictured), second place for February 2013 cover of Fenway the dog for original photography and second place for the July cover illustration by Jeeyon Kim “In the Mood for Summer.” First place was also won for Interior Illustratoin by Katie Kath in Tackling the issues of teen health. As for awards on the web, second place was given to Popcorn Parent’s blogger Roxana Hadadi for best blog.
PMA’s Editorial and Design Awards Competition recognizes excellence in journalism, photography and design achieved by publishers, editors, writers and designers at member publications. Headquartered in Los Angeles, PMA is a nonprofit national organization representing more than 120 parenting magazines and newspapers in the United States, Canada and Australia. The annual convention was held in Philadelphia, Pa. Feb. 27-March 1.
