Chestertown Harry Potter Festival brews up family fun

Grab your wand, dust off your broom and join the fun and magic at the Chestertown Harry Potter Festival Sept. 30-Oct. 2, 2016, when the colonial river town celebrates all things Potter.

Wizards, witches and muggles (non-magical people) of all ages will be spellbound by the things to do and special activities lined up for the magical event inspired by (but not formally associated with) J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter book series.

harry potter festivalFamily-friendly activities start Friday evening, 6-9 p.m., with a Kick-off Party of all things Potter at “Hogwarts” (Garfield Center for the Arts) that includes magic, trivia, wizard rock and costumed fun. Wear your favorite house colors or costume. Cost at the door is $5, adults and free, ages 12 and younger.

Get in the magical mood earlier with a talk and discussion with Dr. Patrick McCauley, author of “Into the Pensieve: The Philosophy and Mythology of Harry Potter,” Sept. 30 from 4:30-5:30 p.m. at The Bookplate

Saturday free events include

  • Kidditch Session, 9 a.m.-noon, KRM Quidditch Pitch – College and club level Quidditch players teach Kidditch for all ages
  • Quidditch Tournament-Day 1, 9 a.m.-?? at Wilmer Park – College and club teams from all over the Delmarva region compete for the prized Chestertown Quidditch Cup
  • Scavenger Hunt, 10 a.m.-3 p.m., begins at Garfield Center for the Arts – Multi-tiered hunt through “Hogsmeade” and “Diagon Alley” establishments. Collect your map at Hogwarts, complete the hunt and win a prize!
  • Potter in the Park, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. in Fountain Park – Food, crafts and vendors. Wizard rock, face painting, Phoenix Dueling Club, Beauxbaton Academy, YMCA Camp Tockwogh, Quidditch Photo Booth
  • Visit Hogwarts Potions Class and The Room of Requirement, 12:30pm – 3:30pm at Garfield Center for the Arts, Presented by Radcliffe Creek School
  • Costume contest, 3:00-3:45 p.m., Fountain Park
  • Themed street theatre skits, ongoing
  • Ollivander’s Wand Co-Op, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at Robert Ortiz Studio – Choose your own handcrafted wand from a variety of artisans
  • Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets Film Screening, 11 a.m.-2 p.m at Kent County Public Library

Ticketed Hogwarts events on Saturday for ages 8-13 are nearly sold out but there is still plenty of fun to be had. Saturday evening also features a pub event for adult wizards and a new event for all ages.

Chestertown shops and restaurants transform into places from J.K. Rowling’s books.

Most events are free and open to the public, but some have limited space and require advance ticket purchase and registration.

The Harry Potter Festival is organized by loyal Potter fans to celebrate the spirit of Harry Potter and promote the local community and its arts. The festival benefits the nonprofit Mid-Shore Community Foundation’s Fund for Kent County and the Garfield Center for the Arts.
