Chestertown Tea Party Festival fun for families all weekend

Help celebrate the colonial resistance to British rule at Chestertown’s Annual Tea Party Festival May 26-28.

Tea Party Festival by Shane Brill WIn response to British Parliament’s closing of the port of Boston, the citizens of Chestertown met in May of 1774 and set forth “Resolves” forbidding importing, selling, or consuming tea in Chestertown. According to local legend, residents then gathered at the town center, marched down High Street to the brigantine Geddes, which was anchored in the Chester River, and tossed her cargo of tea overboard. The annual reenactment of that event is the centerpiece of the Chestertown Tea Party Festival.

The event kicks off with a Street Party Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the foot of High Street. Saturday starts with the Tea Party Distance Classic run at 8 a.m. and a Colonial Parade along High Street at 10 a.m. The Tea Party Re-enactment will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday.

The weekend will also include entertainment, performances, children’s activities, walking tours, public sails on the Sultana, lectures and more. A raft race will take place at 2 p.m. Sunday.

Activities take place throughout Chestertown. The festival is free. See the website for the schedule on the Chestertown Tea Party website, chestertownteaparty.org.
