Celebrate the Year of the Dog as Port Discovery celebrates the Chinese New Year on Saturday, February 24, 2018 from 10 AM -5 PM! Visitors of all backgrounds will learn, experience, and participate in traditions surrounding the Chinese New Year celebration.
The Chinese New Year began Friday, February 16, marking the start of two weeks of celebrations honoring family, traditions and culture. Each year, Port Discovery hosts a large Chinese New Year Celebration featuring opportunities for children and families around the region to learn about, celebrate and participate in traditions surrounding this festive holiday.
The celebration will feature the mesmerizing Chinese Lion Dancers of the Tai Yum Kung Fu School, performances of traditional and modern Chinese Dance, opportunities to learn the art of calligraphy and chopsticks with the Xiamen Chinese Sister City, and a number of art projects and special performances celebrating the day.
10:00-Noon: Create your own scroll using authentic calligraphy brushes and rice paper while discovering Hanzi pictograms, learn about – and decorate – your own mini Kimono, and Make Chinese New Year Lucky Charms with Shrinky Dinks.
10:30 AM -4:00 PM: Learn the art of calligraphy and chopsticks with the Xiamen Chinese Sister City.
11:00 AM: Watch performances of traditional and modern Chinese Dance with artists from the Gina Ling Chinese Dance Chamber.
11:00 AM & Noon: Take part in an interactive Circle Time featuring stories, song and dance that teaches children about the Chinese New Year.
11:00 AM – 2:00 PM: Meet and learn about animals with Wildlife Adventures.
1:00 PM & 1:30 PM: Enjoy a performance by the Chinese Lion Dancers of Tai Kung Fu School as they perform the traditional lion dance using a paper mache lion, instruments and a mesmerizing dance throughout all three floors of the Museum.
2:00 PM -4:00 PM: Use
your creativity to create and decorate Dazzling Dragon artwork, make Lucky Charm Shrinky Dinks, and create a mini Fire Breathing Dragon.
