Other Factors to Consider
Although your main priority is to choose a summer camp your son or daughter likes, you also need to consider the cost, the location, the duration (length of day or number of weeks) and the size of the camp. For example, if your child is outgoing, he or she may enjoy being part of a large group. A small group may be more appropriate if your child is introverted. Seek advice; talk to other parents about their children’s experiences at camp.
In addition, make sure you know the counselor to child ratio and the number of teen counselors on staff. Younger children require more supervision, so depending on your son or daughter’s age, you may feel more comfortable if the camp has more adults on staff. Remember to inquire about safety issues, and make sure the camp is accredited by the American Camp Association (www.acacamps.org). Most important, once you’ve chosen a camp, schedule a visit with your child to make sure it’s a good fit.
“You want your child to have the best possible experience, and the facility has an impact on the type of activity conducted,” says Wanda Ramos, Chairperson of the Summer Programs Committee, The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission Department of Parks and Recreation, Prince George’s County. “If it’s offered, attend the orientation to meet the camp counselors. This is very important since your child will be spending most of the day with them. And if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask the staff.”
Having a variety of summer camp programs available is advantageous. Your child can learn new skills or focus on a specific activity, such as baseball, ballet, science or theatre. Camp offers your child the opportunity to interact with other children, develop friendships and create memories that last a lifetime. It can be a rewarding and enriching experience—one you should definitely encourage your son or daughter to pursue.
