Church Hill, Maryland student finalist in Uncle Ben’s contest

uncle bens contest nnEmily Studebaker, a student at Church Hill Elementary School in Church Hill, has made it to the finals of the Uncle Ben “Let’s Get Kids Cooking” Contest.

Emily’s entry is Rice Fish Cakes, a take on Maryland crabcakes made with cilantro, black beans, corn, and lime juice.  Emily made her video with her mom, Tammy.

Creating a rice-based recipe was a natural for Emily and her mom. Emily has multiple food allergies, including wheat allergies. “When Emily was little, one of the first solid foods she could eat, and practially lived on, was rice,” says Tammy Studebaker. “It’s a staple in our house, as my son also has Celiac Disease.”

If she wins, Emily will receive a $20,000 prize and an appearance on Rachel Ray. Her school, Church Hill Elementary School, will recieve a $50,000 cafeteria make-over.

Voting will take place on Uncle Ben’s Facebook page through March 11. To vote for and view Emily’s video, search for “Emily Studebaker.”

You may vote once a day until the contest ends. For every vote, Uncle Ben will donate $1 to Yum-O, Rachel Ray’s nonprofit organization, which works to empower kids and their families to develop healthy relationships with food and cooking.
