Booming duct tape business
The Eastport resident came up with the idea when his father’s friend mentioned that he needed a new wallet. Grady Googled directions for making wallets out of duct tape but the instructions he found had too many measurements.
“I didn’t want to deal with that, so I just made up my own,” he explains.
At first no one at school wanted one, but when he started making them more detailed, they started selling. He even sells them out of Fun For All toyshop in Annapolis and has earned about $800 so far. The wallets range in price from $10 to $20 and take anywhere from 15 minutes to 5 hours to make depending on how detailed they are.
“My dad started a company so he helped me through the whole process,” Grady says. “He gave me advice and stuff.”
His stepmother entered his business, GB Wallets, into the governor’s contest by posting pictures on Pintrest.
“When they said my name as first place winner, I was blown away,” Grady says. He won a Mac Book Air and got to meet the governor.
And what’s next for the young entrepreneur?
“I’m going to brainstorm other things, but I’m going to continue doing wallets,” he says. “I think I’d like to be an aviation pilot, but this is good for now.”
