One of the easiest things you can do to improve your cooking is to learn a bit about salt. When you look in the spice aisle, you may be confused by all of the variations. Not to worry — I’m here to help.
Sea Salt comes from water harvested directly from the sea and allowed to evaporate until only salt remains. It can be used in most of your favorite recipes with no changes at all. The smaller crystals of fine sea salt blend easily into dishes, helping to unlock the flavor of the food.
Kosher Salt: My favorite, kosher salt sticks well to food and dissolves slowly, imparting a well-rounded flavor. It’s great for rimming margarita glasses, roasting, barbecuing, marinating, and making rubs. I like it because the large flakes are easy to grab and sprinkle on food while I’m cooking.
Table Salt: This go-to kitchen staple is a must for baking because the tiny uniform crystals allow for precise measurements. It is perfect for filling salt shakers, though I typically avoid the iodized version because it can sometimes taste a bit chemical.
This super fast cheesy rice side dish uses fine sea salt and will be a tasty dish your family will love. Using chicken broth adds more flavor than water and the perfect quantity of salt brings it all together flavor-wise. Make it tonight!
One Pot Easy Cheesy Vegetables & Rice
- 11/2 tablespoons vegetable or canola oil
- 1/2 teaspoon Morton Fine Sea Salt
- 1 cup extra-long grain rice (15 minute variety)
- 2 cups frozen mixed vegetables
- 3 cups chicken stock
- 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
Heat oil in medium saucepan over medium-high heat. Add remaining ingredients, except for cheese. Bring to boil for 1 minute. Reduce heat to low, cover and simmer for 10 minutes, or until liquid is absorbed. Add cheese and stir until melted and serve immediately.
