There is magic in the trees around this time of year and you can learn all about it at several maple sugaring events in the Baltimore area.

maple magic 3 WOregon Ridge Nature Center in Cockeysville will hold two Maple Sugaring Weekends Feb. 18-19 and 25-26. Head to the Sugar Shack anytime between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. to learn the process of making maple syrup. Take a hike to the sugar bush to tap a tree for sap. Then taste maple syrup and sugar. Ladew Gardens in Monkton is holding its annual “Maple Magic” event Feb. 18-19. Learn to identify trees, see tapped maple trees and collect some sap. Then learn how to boil down the sap to make brown syrup and taste maple treats. Tours are available at noon and 2 p.m. Tickets are $10, adults; $5, ages 3-12; and free for ages 2 and younger. Irvine Nature Center in Owings Mills will hold a Maple Magic event Feb. 25 from 1:30-3 p.m. Join Irvine’s naturalists in making maple syrup. Learn to identify maple trees, how to properly tap a tree to collect its sugary sap and convert it into syrup. All visitors will get a taste. Open to all ages with an adult. $10, free for members.
