Explore Bacon Ridge Natural Area during Walk for the Woods

Walk for Woods boy webBacon Ridge Natural Area in Crownsville will be open for hiking during the Walk for the Woods Saturday, April 18, 2015, 7 a.m.-3 p.m. Near the old Crownsville Hospital, the natural area encompasses close to 1,000 acres of preserved land and is only open to the public during this annual event.

Walk for the Woods is free. However, donations will help the Scenic Rivers Land Trust preserve land in Anne Arundel County.

Visitors are welcome to hike independently on flagged trails or join a guided walk.

Trails are on steep topography and can be muddy and slippery. Leashed dogs are welcome after 10 a.m. The last entrance for hiking is 2 p.m.

Morning bird hikes are scheduled for 7, 7:30 and 8 a.m. Interested birders can pre-register for these when registering for the event.

Sign up for other hikes at the registration table when you arrive.

Walk for Woods birdersScheduled hike types and times are:

  • 9:30 a.m. Yoga hike, 2 miles
    Enjoy the woods in a meditative state of mind with simple stretching and observing exercises along the way. Led by trained yoga instructor. Must be 16 years or older.
  • 10 a.m. Off-trail Woodland Hike, strenuous, 4 miles
  • 10:30 a.m. Northern Trails Hike, 4 miles
  • 11 a.m. Nature Hike for all ages, 2 miles
  • 11:30 a.m. Reptile and Amphibians Hike for all ages, 1-2 miles
  • Noon, Off-trail Woodland Hike, strenuous, 4 miles
  • Ongoing: Noon-3 p.m. Feet, Tails and Fins: Aquatic Critters Discovery for all ages, 1-2 miles
  • 12:30 p.m. Northern Trails Hike for all ages, 2 miles
  • 1:30 p.m. Nature Hike for all ages, 2 miles
  • Ongoing: “Say My Name” Cemetery Remembrance Walk

Stop by the ongoing sessions any time they are offered to learn more about history and biology.

Bacon Ridge Natural Area and the Walk in the Woods is located via GPS by using Farm Road in Crownsville, Md., and follow Farm Road to registration.

Or take Generals Highway to Crownsville Road. Turn right on Marbury Road (within ¼ mile of Generals Highway). Follow signs to parking and the trailhead.
