At Severn School, the arts are more than just a subject; they are a vital and dynamic part of every student’s educational experience, inspiring creativity, collaboration, and self-expression at every stage. Whether it’s learning to draw for the first time, taking center stage in a school play, or exploring new artistic methods, students discover the profound impact of the arts. More than just mastering techniques, Severn’s arts program shapes well-rounded individuals by fostering critical thinking, cultural awareness, and respect for diverse perspectives. Through creative problem-solving and meaningful expression, students unlock new ways to communicate their ideas and build skills that extend far beyond the studio or stage, preparing them to thrive in any community or career.

“The Arts program here at Severn is diverse enough that if you’re a student who likes art or even just think you might like art, you will absolutely find a home here somewhere,” said Skip Sensbach, Upper School 3-D Art Teacher and Art Club Advisor.
A Community of Artists
The Upper School Arts program offers students the opportunity to explore Visual, Musical, and Dramatic Arts. From classical drawing to digital illustration, from sculpture to Jam Band, students can either specialize or explore various disciplines. Guided by nationally recognized faculty, the program emphasizes both technical skill and creative confidence. Students can engage in a range of artistic experiences through classes, clubs, and performance groups, enabling them to stretch their creative boundaries and showcase their talents.
Clubs, Classes and Spaces
The Ceramics Club, Music Club, Improv Club, Art Club, and Photography Club are just a few examples of the arts-focused clubs at Severn. All clubs are run by students with support from a faculty advisor. And if a student has an interest that isn’t currently represented, there is an easy path to launch and lead a new club in pursuit of that passion.
Arts classes are offered in visual arts, music, and theater. Students can explore a variety of introductory courses or dive deep into a single subject. There are also dedicated spaces that cater to the arts, including Price Theater, a professional setting for concerts and plays that includes rehearsal space, backstage amenities, and space for an orchestra pit. There is also the Jay F. Meisenberg recording studio, where Severn students the opportunity to learn how to perform, record, edit, and produce their own music in a state-of-the-art recording studio. There is also a darkroom for photography classes, computer lab for digital arts classes, large ceramics studio, and rehearsal and practice spaces.
Take Your Cue: Get to Know the Arts at Severn

Severn offers a variety of both curricular and extra-curricular music and performing opportunities for students. Performing Arts courses include Jam Band, Instrumental Ensemble and Choir. Extra-curricular performing opportunities include the Fall Play and the Winter Musical, as well as the co-ed a cappella group, Breakwater.
This fall, Severn is hosting two admission events in partnership with the Upper School Arts Department. On October 21, prospective students can join the Improv Club for an hour of games, laughter, and collaboration. And on November 18, prospective Upper School students are invited to attend the final dress rehearsal for the Water Street Players’ fall production of She Kills Monsters – where anything can, and often does, go wrong – and then stay to talk with the cast and crew at the end. While not a performance, observing a dress rehearsal offers an authentic look at the whole process of producing a show.
