Facing the future — FranklyStein

Adam driveWe are speeding into the future at the Stein house.

This past week Adam got his driver’s license, and Maggie made the first step in the transition to college. There’s no turning back. The kids are growing up.

Adam’s driving has already made a huge impact on the household. Having a second teenage driver is a win (when you get past the insurance sticker price and the sheer fear of your child behind the wheel). As soon as he got home from the test, he drove himself and Lilly to swim practice. On Saturday, he took them both to SAT tutoring, swimming, and then he drove he and Jonah to a water polo clinic. On Sunday, he met a friend at the park, took himself to church and drove he and Lilly to youth group. That’s 10 trips alone that my husband and I did not have to make. And did I mention he’s driving our huge gold bus? Watch out if you’re on the road out there.

This week Adam started driving himself to school. This means I never have to take him, pick him up or drive to swimming. This morning, I was ready for work a half hour early. I’m not sure what I’m going to do with all this free time.

Mags York bookstoreMeanwhile on Saturday, I took Maggie to York College’s Admitted Students Day, and the fact that she’s going to college became very real. As soon as we arrived, she found other future swim team members and was gone. I saw very little of her until she wanted to visit the bookstore later in the day.

In a few short months, we will be leaving her there to stay. But after seeing her with her new friends, making her way around the college campus, I know that she’s found the right place for her. I know she’s going to be happy and that gives me peace of mind to make it through this transition.
