Family fun at the Great Chesapeake Balloon Festival

Over 15 hot air balloons will be on display at The Great Chesapeake Balloon and Wine Festival Aug. 5 and 6 just outside of Easton.

Balloon FestivalFamilies can actually experience going up in a hot air balloon on a tethered balloon ride. Down on the ground, they can check out the Walk-About Balloon — a large balloon partially inflated for children and adults to venture into the center. And for the first time, a kids zone will feature a petting zoo, hay rides, climbing wall, face painting and more. Families can also enjoy a food truck rally, crafts and other vendors.

A Balloon Glow will be held Friday night with balloons lit from the inside. The balloon glow was invented in Albuquerque in 1979, when local pilots inflated balloons on Christmas Eve night to thank local residents. The balloons lit from within at night look like giant holiday ornaments, and now glow events are held all over the world.

The event has a new location at the Triple Creek Winery in Cordova. The festival runs Friday, 5-9 p.m., and Saturday, 6 a.m.-9 p.m. Entry fee is $5 per car. Tethered balloon rides are $20 for adults and $10 for children, The Walk-About Balloon is $2. Balloon flights are already booked. For details visit greatchesapeakeballoonfestival.com.
