CloudyWithAChanceOfMeatballs2 ChesapeakeFamilyMovieReviewKernel Rating (out of 5): whole-popcorn-kernalwhole-popcorn-kernalhalf-popcorn-kernal

MPAA Rating: PG        Length: 95 minutes

Age Appropriate For: 6+. Some typical children’s movie stuff, like bathroom humor; some violent humor related to the cannibalistic food villains; and a couple kissing. Also some bullying.

‘Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs’ was a surprising success, an explosion of energy and color that actually championed science. This derivative sequel unfortunately loses most of the original’s charm.

If I were to rank modern animated children’s films, I wouldn’t put 2009’s “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs” above most things from Pixar, but it would certainly go over series like “Ice Age” or “Madagascar.” “Meatballs” actually had something to it, something more than animals voiced by celebrities getting paid too many big bucks—in its own way, it actually championed science and the underdog. Unfortunately, “Meatballs 2” isn’t as original, but it’s bright and almost manically energetic. And the puns—so many puns!
