Family Movie Review: Dolphin Tale 2 (PG)

DolphinTale2 ChesapeakeFamilyMovieReviewKernel Rating (out of 5): whole-popcorn-kernalwhole-popcorn-kernalhalf-popcorn-kernal

MPAA Rating: PG        Length: 107 minutes

Age Appropriate For: 8+. The film is very similar to its predecessor, ‘Dolphin Tale,’ with some injured animals (a dolphin that was beached and sunburned, a turtle that got caught in a fishing wire); one that attacks its handler, giving him a black eye and a fractured wrist; and one that dies—the image of the dead dolphin on the floor of the pool might be troubling for children. Also some very slight romantic tension between the two main teenage characters and the suggestion of crushes.

Three years after its predecessor, ‘Dolphin Tale 2’ reunites audiences with the unique dolphin Winter, who swims with a prosthetic tail. Nothing about the story is surprising, but for children it should be effectively inspirational, if somewhat bland.

“Dolphin Tale 2” has its heart in the right place, but that doesn’t make it any less bland. The sequel to 2011’s “Dolphin Tale,” about the rescued dolphin Winter who lost her tail and received a prosthetic one instead, focuses again on the bottlenose—this time, she needs a female companion to stay at her home, Clearwater Marine Aquarium; otherwise, she’ll be seized by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Based on real events, the story goes along as you would expect and delivers the happy ending you want. But excitement? “Dolphin Tale 2” does not do excitement.
