MPAA Rating: PG Length: 105 minutes
Age Appropriate for: 10+. It’s a movie about mixed martial arts, so even if there’s a comedic tone throughout, there are still is a fair amount of violence and fighting. The sport is shown fairly accurately but the blood and gore are toned down, which may be a bit disingenuous for kids—there’s no way, for example, that someone could survive a MMA fight with only a few bruises and cuts. Also a few jokes about male genitalia, some projectile vomiting, a little cleavage, and a kiss.
‘Here Comes the Boom’ doesn’t look like much initially, but it wins you over with its aggressive inoffensiveness—the movie isn’t great, but it also has a winning comic tone and a standard underdog story that anyone can get behind. It’s not a sports movie classic, but it’s fine enough.

You may have already seen “Here Comes the Boom,” and that’s because last year’s “Warrior” was basically the exact same movie. Struggling teacher decides to become a mixed martial arts fighter to make some money; ends up inspiring some kids along the way; becomes shockingly successful and earns a chance at joining the UFC, the largest MMA promo company in the world. But where “Warrior” suffered from an overbearing amount of melodrama, “Here Comes the Boom” is a nicely amusing underdog affair, the kind of movie that wins you over with how shockingly not bad it is.
