Family Movie Review: John Carter (PG-13)

MPAA Rating: PG-13       Length: 132 minutes

Age Appropriate for: 13+. Lots of violent action scenes, between both humans and aliens, so there is blood-spray and dead bodies, and also painful memories of the brutality of the Civil War. And though there is no nudity, the main female character is forced by the bad guys into wearing some sexually suggestive outfits.

Disney hasn’t hyped up ‘John Carter’ nearly as much as they should—the sci-fi Western deserves to be this year’s first blockbuster, a thrilling mix of action and humor that does good by creator Edgar Rice Burroughs.

We’re months away from the summer heavyweights—”The Avengers,” “Prometheus,” “The Dark Knight Rises”—but Disney’s “John Carter” deserves to be a blockbuster. It’s an ambitious, largely successful adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ turn-of-the-century serial “Barsoom”—a little bit of “Lawrence of Arabia” and “Star Wars” on that great red planet.
