Kernel Rating (out of 5):
MPAA Rating: PG-13 Length: 126 minutes
Age Appropriate for: 13+. The film follows a typical sci-fi formula, so there are some fight scenes between various groups; drones that kill humans; and some gunshot wounds and explosions. There is also some implied sexual activity and nude butts, some cursing, and some cigar-smoking.
‘Oblivion’ is, first and foremost, staggeringly beautiful, an imagining of a post-apocalyptic world that keeps some of the sci-fi genre’s expected tropes (American landmarks destroyed or askew, to signify traumatic warfare!) but recreates them fairly effectively. And yup, Tom Cruise is still as charming as ever.

“Oblivion” is just good enough that I may forgive Tom Cruise for the terribleness of last fall’s “Jack Reacher.” Maybe. And that’s high praise, let me tell you, given how phenomenally awful that movie was.
