Kernel Rating (out of 5):
MPAA Rating: PG Length: 92 minutes
Age Appropriate For: 6+. Some scenes may be frightening for very young children, like a plane being afraid of heights and falling toward the earth; a scene during which many planes die in battle; and some other tense scenes of planes flying through tunnels and narrowly avoiding drowning. Also some implied romance, like some lipstick kiss marks left on a male plane.
Disney’s ‘Planes’ was originally a direct-to-DVD spinoff of the Pixar ‘Cars’ franchise. It should have stayed that way.

Disney just shouldn’t try to accomplish things without Pixar. Because whereas Pixar’s “Cars” franchise was a little goofy but mostly adorable, Disney’s “Planes”—a spinoff of “Cars” but without Pixar’s involvement—is frustratingly dull and pointless. Every character is underdeveloped; every lesson is a cliché. There is absolutely no reason to pay to see this film in the theater when it will undoubtedly be rerunning on the Disney Channel in a few months’ time. In fact, “Planes” was originally supposed to go direct to DVD; a million hexes on whoever changed that decision.
