Family Movie Review: Pump (PG)

Pump ChesapeakeFamilyMovieReviewKernel Rating (out of 5): whole-popcorn-kernalwhole-popcorn-kernalhalf-popcorn-kernal

MPAA Rating: PG        Length: 88 minutes

Age Appropriate For: 12+. Nothing inappropriate, really; no cursing, violence, or sexual content. There is some discussion about the U.S. military, wars in the Middle East, and American casualties, though.

‘Pump’ attempts to make a case for Americans rejecting international oil sources and choosing more environmentally and economically friendly options instead. It’s a fine argument, but the documentary is flatly methodical.

By Roxana Hadadi

Going too broad can hurt a documentary. A specific argument made in a tight, fluid way is the key to simultaneously educating viewers and making the filmmakers’ point, which was the success of this year’s “Rich Hill” and “Fed Up” and last year’s “Blackfish.” “Pump” has an argument, too—that Americans should rise up to reject our reliance on international oil—but the methodology is generic. There is little here that you couldn’t learn from a few minutes searching online.
