Kernel Rating (out of 5):
MPAA Rating: PG-13 Length: 127 minutes
Age Appropriate for: 12+. Rated PG-13 mainly for the violence and sexual content; there’s no cursing. Violence includes big battle scenes, stabbed-through-the-heart murders, and an evil witch sucking out people’s souls and eating bird hearts. Sexual content includes one implied sex scene (with no nudity) and a few kisses. Also drinking, jokes about drug use and bodily functions, and thematically dark, black magic content.
‘Snow White and the Huntsman’ is gorgeous visually and mediocre narratively, lacking enough character development to stand up to its lush costumes and settings. Even with Charlize Theron’s wonderfully over-the-top portrayal of the Evil Queen, ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’ doesn’t pack the right kind of impact.

In comparison with Tarsem Singh’s goofy, somewhat-self-aware spin on Snow White, March’s “Mirror Mirror,” first-time director Rupert Sanders’s “Snow White and the Huntsman” was supposed to be a war epic, an edgy, serious fantasy that provided butt-kicking power to the princess. For the most part, Sanders does that—but Snow White doesn’t really deserve it.
