Age Appropriate for: 8+. Most of the humor of “The Croods” is of the, “Look how primitive they are!” variety, so there are some scary scenes with fire, lava, an earthquake, and lightning, and some violence includes a vengeful bird and dagger-wielding. It’s all played for a clearly humorous effect, but there are a few characters that die. Also, the teen daughter character wears a fairly little mini-dress.
‘The Croods’ is not, by any means, an original story—prehistoric times, family dynamics, we’ve seen this before. But the film works to make up for that lack of plot with beautiful imagery and wonderfully done animation.

“The Croods” is a pretty pile of mayhem—wonderful visually, engrossing in its beauty, but woefully one-note in its story structure. Of course, are young viewers, the film’s core demographic, going to care about that? Probably not. But at least the movie isn’t coasting on bathroom humor, either.
