Family Movie Review: The Raven (R)

TheRaven ChesapeakeFamilyMovieReviewKernel Rating (out of 5): whole-popcorn-kernal

MPAA Rating: R       Length: 111 minutes

Age Appropriate for: 15+. Gory and gross in a “Saw” way, as some of Poe’s classic stories are brought to life. The worst is a murder by huge, swinging axe, which leads to a man being very bloodily cut in half; otherwise you have people being buried alive, tortured, etc. Also cursing and heaving cleavage.

Ugh, what a terrible disservice to Edgar Allan Poe’s memory. Everything about ‘The Raven’ is all wrong, from the poor casting to the overwhelmingly silly premise. If I were Poe, I would haunt everyone involved in this travesty, just to teach them a lesson.

In case you didn’t know, Edgar Allan Poe had a very mysterious, bizarre death, one in which he was found in strange clothes and repeating a man’s name. All medical records have been lost; no one really knows what happened to him. For a man who wrote that many creepy, unreal stories about death, it seems a fitting—if macabre—end. So shame on “The Raven” for grabbing the trauma of Poe’s life for its own gain. It is such a terrible movie.
