Family Movie Review: Thor 2: The Dark World (PG-13)

MPAA Rating: PG-13          Length: 112 minutes

Age Appropriate For: 13+. Lots of action violence that results in many deaths, but it’s not excessively bloody or gory; some citywide destruction; and the murder of a parent that is shocking and saddening. Some kissing, a nude man whose genitalia is never seen is played for laughs, a gratuitous shirtless scene by Hemsworth, and some mild cursing.

‘Thor 2: The Dark World’ kicks off the second phase of Marvel superhero movies after the staggering success of 2012’s ‘The Avengers.’ Thanks to the continued greatness of Tom Hiddleston as Loki and Chris Hemsworth’s growing comfort in the title role, the film is enjoyable enough.

Thor wasn’t my favorite Avenger, but thanks to 2011’s “Thor” and this sequel, “The Dark World,” that’s steadily changing. This first installment in the Marvel franchise after the insane worldwide success of 2012’s “The Avengers” is effective enough; even if it’s too heavy on the exposition, at least Tom Hiddleston (of “War Horse”) is back as Loki, adding a ridiculous amount of maniacal charm to this whole thing.
